Michael Hampsey has been performing a variety of folk-roots music since the mid-70's, when he was playing bluegrass with Drew Danielson in the French Creek Valley Boys. Michael attended the `1964 Newport (RI) Folk Festival which exposed him to many genres of folk music. After learning basic folk guitar styles, Hampsey began playing mandolin in 1965 after seeing Yank Rachell playing blues mandolin with guitarist Sleepy John Estes(also at Newport). Hampsey has been performing acoustic blues and Celtic folk music in the EriePA area since 1986, with bluesman Rodger Montgomery, and his own trio,Brokenstraw. Since 2012, Hampsey has been a volunteer at the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park (2 wks/yr). His duties have ranged from staffing the visitor's center to performing with New Orleans musicians. This is his 3rd HOTAfest as a workshop presenter.
